How to file a cyber crime complaint

The complaint in the case of cyber crimes is registered with the cyber crimes cells. The complaint can be filed by both online as well as offline medium. Also, it is not necessary to register a cyber complaint in the city where you reside or where the crime is committed. Cyber crime comes under the global jurisdiction, i.e. it can be registered with any of the cyber crimes cells in India. 

A cyber crime cell has been established in the various cities of the country, to make it convenient for the people to get proper assistance in any case of any injury or damage due any cyber crime committed against them. 

How to file complaint offline

  • The victim of the crime can file a written complaint in the nearest cyber crime cell or in any cyber crime cell around the country. 
  • The written complaint shall be addressed  to the Head of the Cyber crime cell and the following information are required to be registered-
  • Name
  • Contact details
  • Mailing address
  • Other documents required to be attached may depend upon the type of the cyber crime committed against the victim. 

How to file a complaint online?

  • The cyber crime complaint can be filed online and registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which is provided by the Government of India so as to facilitate the nationwide cyber crime complaints and to help [people have easy access to the cyber crime cells and could provide people with the information related to cyber crimes at their fingertips. 
  • There are two types of complaints registered on the portal-

  • Mobile crimes
  • Social media crimes
  • Online financial crimes
  • Cyber trafficking
  • Hacking 
  • Ransomware
  • crimes related to women and children-
  • Child Pornography
  • Child sexual abuse- containing sexually implicit images of a child who is abused or exploited
  • Sexually explicit content.

How to report and track ?

  • The complainant of a cyber crime related to women or children can file the complaint without providing their legit information  and can track the status of the complaint by logging in through their complaint ID. 
  • A timely update is provided to the complainant of the investigation and the actions taken by the police on his registered mobile number and email ID. 
  • It is recommended that the complainant should report the crime through the “report and track” option, as it would be helpful for the legal agencies to contact him/her further during the process of investigation. 
  • After the complaint is successfully registered, he/she will have to choose the category of the kind of complaint to be filed such as CP/RGR/Sexually Explicit content, etc. and following details are to be provided-
  • Date and time of the incidents
  • Platform where the incident took place, such as facebook, whatsapp, etc
  • Upload evidence- images, videos, documents, etc.

National cyber crime helpline number is 1930. In case you are a victim to some financial fraud, you may call this number with appropriate details, such as your name, contact information, account number including  details of the account which you transferred the money to or any other details related to the crime.
