Inter-faith marriages are also known as inter-religion marriages. According to research based on marriages in India, only 10 % of people perform inter-faith marriage in India. And, 2.5 % of people perform an inter-religion marriage. In many places of India, still, inter-caste or inter-religion marriage is not seen as a good thing. There are many laws present in India to allow inter-religion or inter-faith marriages. These can be very useful in eliminating discrimination in India. 

Important Law For Inter-Faith Marriage In India – 

  • Special Marriage Act, 1954

The Special Marriage Act is one of the most important laws for the marriage of partners who belong to different religions. It is applicable to all over India including Jammu & Kashmir. As per this act, the two partners will perform the marriage without changing their religion.

There are two ways to perform the Inter-Religion Marriage In India – 

  1. Without Conversion 
  2. With Conversion 
  3. Without Conversion 

If someone wants to perform their marriage without converting their religion, the marriage will be performed as per the special marriage act. It takes at least 30 days for the completion of marriage under this act. The consent of parents is also important for the marriage.

It follows the same process of marriage, the marriage of partners under the Special Marriage Act.

  1. With Conversion 

If any of the partners convert their religion to another, the marriage will be performed as per the marriage laws. The laws can be –

i) Hindu Marriage Act, 1954 – If both the partners belong to the Hindu religion (after conversion) then, they can easily perform their marriage as per this act.

ii) Muslim Marriage Laws – If both the partners belong to the Muslim religion (after conversion) then, they can easily perform their marriage as per this act.

iii) Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872 – If both the partners belong to the Christian religion (after conversion) then, they can easily perform their marriage as per this act.

  • Parents Consent is not necessary for this kind of marriage.
  • It takes only one day for the complete process of marriage.
  • There is a facility for Intimation letter & Newspaper Publication. 
  • It will help you in getting police protection very easily.

The Documents Required For The Inter Faith Marriage in india- 

  1. Identity Proof – Both the partners need to submit the ID Proof documents ( PAN Card / Voter ID Card / Passport )
  2. Address Proof – Both the partners can send their documents: Aadhar Card / Ration Card / Passport
  3. Passport Size Photographs 
  4. Birth Proof – Class 10th Marksheet / Any Other Birth Proof Document

Also, there are 2-3 witnesses are required for the marriage of partners. They have to submit their address proof & identity proof.
