Marriage Procedure Of Goa

After a couple registers, their state government issues a marriage certificate attesting to the couple’s marital relationship. Either the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, or the Special Marriage Act, 1954, govern marriage registration in India.

How is marriage performed in Goa?

  • Chuddo: Bangles are a significant bridal ornament in Goan wedding culture. The Goan bride is expected to dress in her finest bangles according to tradition. We refer to these bangles with a certain color and pattern as “chuddo.” They are typically bought from the volar, sometimes called kankonkar, the village’s regular or local bangle salesperson who is frequently invited around to homes. The glass bangles are quite delicate.
  • Ros: In this anointing ceremony, the bride and groom are anointed in their respective homes by their parents, relatives, neighbors, and friends with coconut milk. Usually, this is completed two or three days before the wedding. This ritual represents the birth of a new life. Before the wedding, the coconut milk is utilized and claimed to purify or cleanse the couple, signifying the end of their single existence.
  • Bhuim Jevon: This dinner honors the “bikaraimche jevon,” the family’s forefathers. This dinner is intended for the underprivileged residents of the village and beggars. This Jevon served more as a Thanksgiving and offering to the family’s deceased ancestors. Many of these customs are being abandoned in favor of feeding orphanages and senior homes for lunch.
  • Oopsun: The custom in which the bride’s father or legal guardian formally gives her away.
