Marriage Procedure Of Gujarat

In essence, a marriage certificate serves as documentation of your marriage’s legality, much like a mandatory registration. Furthermore, it is a well-known component of a document whose main function is to assist you in obtaining a PAN card, visa, and passport. Therefore, the marriage certificate serves not only as a legally binding record that may be used as evidence, but it is also necessary in order to make claims against life insurance and bank deposits.

To have the proof that you are legally married to someone, your marriage needs to get formally registered. The Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 and the Special Marriage Act of 1954 is mostly used in Gujarat to register any marriage.

How is marriage performed in Gujarat?

  • Varghodo: The groom and his family arrive at the wedding location in a parade or on a decorated horse. The bride’s family joyfully greets the groom with folk music and dances.
  • Ponkhana: The bride’s mother performs an arti, or ceremony of waving a lamp, to fend off evil spirits and bless the husband. The groom is then escorted to the mandap, or bridal canopy.
  • Jaimala: As a sign of acceptance and unity, the bride and groom exchange garlands. The pair is then showered with blessings and rose petals.
  • Kanyadaan: In this ceremony, the father of the bride formally delivers his daughter over to the husband in exchange for a pledge that the groom will care for her in the same manner as he has for all these years.
  • Saptapadi: There are four pheras taken during a Gujarati wedding, compared to seven at other Hindu marriages. The priest chants mantras as the couple makes their laps around the hallowed fire. The pair, known as Saptapadi, follows seven stages to be proclaimed married. They then ask for the blessings of all of their elders.
  • Ashirvad: The young couple asks their elders for blessings, and they receive rice, flowers, and well wishes for a happy married life.
  • Vidaai: The bride bids her family farewell at the Vidaai ceremony. The mother is meant to catch the rice in her pallu when the bride tosses it backwards with her hands full of rice. The bride tosses the rice without turning around.
