Journalists shall Document & Expose Fault in Society

In The Age Of Fake News, We Need Journalists More Than Ever To Document the Unseen & Expose Fault Lines In Society.

While addressing the 11th Convocation and Founder’s Day Ceremony at the O.P. Jindal Global University, the Supreme Court Judge Justice D.Y.  Chandrachud remarked, that “We need journalists more than ever to capture the invisible and reveal the cracks in our society in the age of fake news and misinformation”

Following are some of the main points from the address of the Supreme Court Judge-

India will be celebrating its 75th independence day in a few days, while we have taken strides in all spheres towards achieving our constitutional ideals and values, we shall make sure that the independence day does not become a ritualistic celebration of our freedom.

It should be a moment of introspection of our progress and fulfilling the values of the constitution, which our constitution makers aspired to achieve.

Your students have the ability to transform the privilege of education into transforming your neighbourhood and the world a better place each day of your life.

Even after a period of 75 years, many communities in India are still awaiting to taste the fruits of independence and democracy for the sole reason of the hierarchical social and economic structure. Many of the citizens, even today, are deprived of social equality and economic equality.

Dr. Ambedkar warned  us that our political democracy would be at threat till we do not support social democracy. It is not the sole responsibility of the government or judiciary for that matter, to promote social equality and justice. It exists in all of us.

Need A Legal Advice

The internet is not a lawyer and neither are you. Talk to a real lawyer about your legal issue

A woman accosted Benjamin Franklin when he was leaving the constitutional convention of 1787 about the type of government the convention had deliberated upon. Franklin replied,” A republic, if you can keep it”. This reply is persistent in the context of India as well. Our constitutional culture needs to be maintained by all of us. We citizens have to take part in this slow but vital task of transforming the constitution everyday.

All  of you are the representative of a new India in a true sense, as you go out of the walls of the university, you should introspect how your actions could contribute to the society’s betterment and contribute to the strength of the constitutional ethos of social democracy in India.

Though our law provides formal equality of opportunity, in reality we live in an asymmetrical world where opportunities are unequally distributed. Thus, these opportunities may open doors for the “haves” but not for the “don’t haves”.

As you enter the next phase of your life, many of you will undertake different responsibilities,as lawyers, journalists, policymakers, as economists, academicians, entrepreneurs or business managers. It could be understood that you all may have different responsibilities. But a small contribution on your part will create a big difference in someone’s life. And in doing so, you elevate your own sense of being.
