The National Award For Senior Citizens

The scheme of the National Award for Senior Citizens (Vayoshreshtha Samman) was started in 2005 and is committed towards senior citizens. The Central government supports this scheme. This system is relevant to the distinguished senior citizens committed to providing exceptional assistance to the elderly bodies. Institutions and senior citizens can get the benefit from this scheme by reaching the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

An Integrated Curriculum for Older Persons

Aims and Aspirations

The main objective of the scheme is to enhance the living conditions of older persons by promoting fertile and productive aging by managing basic amenities such as home, food, medical care, and leisure moments. It implements assistance for the potential development of the government, NGOs/Panchayati Raj Institutions/Local Organizations, and Federations at large.

Under the project, compensation will be provided to Panchayati Raj Institutions/Local Organizations and eligible non-government willful regulations for the latter purposes:-

  • Programs provide food, shelter, and health care for the essential needs of older persons, especially poor older persons.
  • Programs to develop and encourage relationships, especially between children/youth and older persons.
  • Programs to support proactive and proliferative aging. 
  • Program to establish institutional and non-institutional care/support for older persons.
  • Surveillance, and consciousness-building meetings during aging.
  • Any other demonstration of the most beneficial benefits of older persons.

Executing Agencies

Under the project, compensation will be sanctioned to subsequent offices subject to the conditions and contingencies laid down by this Ministry:-

  • Panchayati Raj Institutions / Local organisations
  • Non-Governmental Voluntary Organizations
  • Institutions or Organizations established by the Government as independent/secondary organizations
  • Government Acknowledged Educational establishments, Charitable Hospitals / Nursing Homes, and distinguished juvenility institutions such as Nehru Yuvak Kendra Sanghathan.
  • In an extraordinary case, economic support under the Project shall also be presented to State Governments/Union Territory administrators.

Acceptance Criteria for Non-Government Voluntary Associations

  • The Non-Government Voluntary Association should be a certified body under a relevant Act. It gives a corporate status and stabilizes a legal character and related accountability for its projects.
  • It must be either enrolled under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, or the appropriate State Societies Registration Act and already operating for at least two years.
  • It should have been nominated for a minimum period of two years, but in the case of the North-Eastern region, J&K, desert areas, and under-served/under-represented domains. This requirement of two years would not be appropriate.
  • The organization shall have a suitably authorized governing organization with its officers, responsibilities, and accountability properly established and credited in a recorded constitution.
  • The group is inaugurated and operated by its associates in constitutional positions.
  • Schedules are specifically set out in the aims and objectives of the company and the achievement of those aims and objectives.
  • The organization shall not operate any person for any kind of profit. The organization should maintain proven credit and capabilities to manage such schemes.

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS), formerly called “National Old Age Pension Scheme (NOAPS)”, is a social segmentation system and is part of the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP), which came into effect on August 15, 1995. This project implements social support for older persons.

Acceptability Guidelines

To claim the required support, the following guidelines will be applicable:

  • The age of the candidate (male or female) should be 60 years or above.
  • As per the guidelines of the Government of India, the appellant should belong to a family of low poverty group.

Pattern of support

Applicable central assistance in the form of payment of Rs. 200 PM for persons between 60 years to 79 years. The payment is Rs 500/- per month for bodies of age 80 years or more. States are strongly requested to contribute at least a supplementary amount of a similar product to the compensation provided by the Central Government so that the recipients get a respectable level of support.
