What Is Marriage Registration & Certificate?

Marriage Registration is the most important process before getting a marriage certificate. This process is performed in the presence of a marriage registrar & 2-3 witnesses. There are many laws for marriage registration in India. 

These laws can be –  a) Hindu Marriage Act, 1955  b) Special Marriage Act, 1954  c) Muslim Personal Law d) Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872.

Step 1: Eligibility Of Partners

At first, you have to understand that both the partners must be eligible for the registration of marriage.

  1. The minimum age for the male & female partners must be 21 years & 18 years respectively. 
  2. Mutual consent of both partners is very important for marriage registration.
  3. Both the partners must not belong to the forbidden relationship.
  4. In the case of a previous marriage, the spouse must be either dead or have got the divorce decree from the court. 

Step 2: Documents For Marriage Certificate 

There are many documents that are important for the registration of the marriage of the partners. These documents can be – 

  1. Identity Proof – Aadhar Card / PAN Card / Passport / Voter ID Card
  2. Birth Proof – Class 10th Marksheet / Birth Certificate
  3. Address Proof – Aadhar Card / Rent Agreement / Electricity Bill / Ration Card
  4. Affidavits – An affidavit is a legal document that contains the details of a person & they verify it. It declares that all the details mentioned here are completely true & valid. 
  5. 2- 3 Witnesses

Step 3: Marriage Registration At Court / BMC / Mumbai Mantralaya

Anyone can apply online for marriage registration & a marriage certificate. But they have to be present in the court / BMC / Mantralaya. The marriage registration will be performed in the presence of a marriage registrar & witnesses.
