The Goods and Services Tax is levied on the supply of goods as well as services. The GST Act was passed by the Parliament dated 29th March 2017 and came into effect on 1st July 2017.

Objectives of GST

The ideology of ‘One Nation, One Tax’

Various indirect taxes which were applied previously have been replaced under the GST. The advantage of a single tax is that a particular product shall be charged for similar rate in every state throughout the country. Hence, tax administration will be simple and easy to follow as the Central Government will be the governing body to make policies and taxation rates.

To merge the various indirect taxes

Before the introduction of the GST, several erstwhile taxes were applied including the Service Tax, Value Added Tax, Central Excise Tax, etc., which were levied at the various stages of the supply chain. There were also taxes which were governed by the Central and State governments separately.

Cascading effect was eliminated

Before the introduction of the GST tax, as multiple were  taxes levied at different stages, it was not possible for the taxpayers to set off tax credits of one tax against the other tax.

To control tax evasion

With the introduction of the GST, taxpayers are able to claim an input tax credit on the invoices uploaded by their respective suppliers. Therefore, the chances of claiming for the input tax credits on fake invoices were highly reduced.

To increase the number of taxpayers

As the process of filing for GST has been reduced to a single tax system, it has resulted in an increase in the tax-registered business. Also, stricter laws for input tax credits have also helped bring the unorganised sectors under the taxation bracket.

Online procedures were introduced

Previously, the taxpayer would have to run around various agencies in order to pay taxes, presently the taxation system has been introduced online and one can apply for registration as well as file his or her taxes through online medium without having to go through the various departments physically and will not have to waste a lot of time.
