Video blackmailing victims can use a few legal means. A criminal complaint of extortion or coercion, based on relevant law provisions like the Penal Code, is available to the victims. In addition to the above, they may bring an action for damages suffered from the blackmail in a civil action. Obtaining a restraining order would further serve as a safeguard against the dissemination or continued threat. This will entail gathering evidence to include screenshots and communication prior to reporting the incident with the appropriate law enforcement or cybercrime unit for further action.

There are quite a few legal remedies available to the victims of video blackmailing in India. Victims can, for instance, file complaints under Section 503 for criminal intimidation and Section 384 for extortion of Indian Penal Code. Further still, Sections 66E and 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, cover privacy violation and distribution of obscene material, respectively. The victims can also approach the local police to file an FIR and seek immediate protection. Another way to take legal action against the perpetrator is to report the incident to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. A lawyer should be consulted before proceeding.
