Passport status

Hello, I have wrongly given my marital status in passport as single while I was separated from my husband. Now still am separated no court cases pending. I have a daughter now when I apply passport for her the passport officer asked me to change my marital status. How do I do that ? Is it possible to change from single to separated ? I don't want to add my spouse name in passport.
