Is registering a Nikah necessary for visa purposes?
I am a foreigner, and my husband is Indian. We performed our Nikah last year in India, and since I want to apply for an X Visa, I need a valid certificate. Is the Nikah enough proof, or do we need to register it first? (I assume it hasn’t been registered yet, as I haven’t been asked to provide any documents from my country). Should it be registered under the Muslim Marriage Act? Since my husband is currently living in the USA and I am in my country, we are considering doing a court marriage in the USA (which is simpler for foreigners) and then registering it under the Foreign Marriage Act at the consulate. This is because the process in India takes longer, and it is challenging for us due to our current situation. If the marriage is registered at the consulate or embassy, will it automatically be valid, or will we need to register it again in India? I really appreciate your time and guidance on this matter.

The Nikah alone is proof of marriage, but for a visa or legal matters, registration is required. You can register it under the Muslim Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act. If done in the USA, registering it at the Indian consulate makes it valid in India, and no further registration is needed. For further legal assistance contact u on our helpline number
