Should I file a police complaint for protection before leaving my house?

I am a Hindu and my partner is a muslim. We have registered our marriage under the special marriage act and have got our registration done 2 days ago without any coercion and both are of legal age for marriage. His parents are completely fine with the marriage but my family is not. I'm leaving my house this week and leave by a letter for them regarding the same. But since my father has been a part of the Indian legal system and retired recently I'm afraid they might harass him or even make a false complaint. Would like your help on if I should do a police complaint before I run away from home seeking both of our protections? Looking forward to your response.

To ensure protection for you and your partner after registering your marriage under the Special Marriage Act, you should file a police complaint stating harassment that may be caused by your family. Document any threats or concerns you have because this can help establish a case for protection. A preemptive complaint will deter harassment and will serve as evidence if issues arise later. Maintain copies of your marriage registration and any relevant correspondence. It is also wise to consult a lawyer to gain tailored advice on your particular situation in dealing with this case.

Moving from your home, especially after documenting an interfaith marriage with the authority, is especially intimidating if you have that phobia of harassment by the families. In this respect, it would be very practical to lodge a police complaint seeking protection for you both against harassment by your family even before you leave home, documenting your grievances and, better, deterring harassment or fictitious complaints against you or your partner. Also, bring proof of marriage registration and threats received, because in case of a problem, this will give more weight to your case.

Ma’am, since you have already registered your marriage under the Special Marriage Act so your marriage is legally valid but if you fear that your parents may file a false complaint against your partner then you may consider filing a police complaint with the help of an expert lawyer who will assist you in providing protection order.
