For starters, if your husband threatens to commit suicide once you file for divorce, please take care of your safety. Legally, these threats fall into the ambit of emotional abuse and mental cruelty, both of which are valid reasons for divorce. Courts have ruled that a life lived in constant fear of the suicidal act of a spouse is deemed to be gross mental cruelty and is sufficient reason for dissolution of the marriage without any such liability on his part. Record all incidents and most importantly seek the counsel of a lawyer and discuss your options on how best to proceed to file for divorce while being properly protected and safe during the procedure.

If your husband says he will commit suicide if you divorce him, you have to take care of yourself and your safety first. Legally, this threat can be seen as a form of emotional blackmail that may amount to mental cruelty, which, in most jurisdictions, is legal ground for divorce. You can't be blamed for what he does when you leave the marriage because his reaction to your decision reflects his problems, not yours. You should seek professional legal advice and possibly engage with mental health professionals to appropriately deal with his threats and, at the same time, ensure your protection.
