What actions will be taken against me for religious concerns?
I am a Central Government employee through UPSC. I am a Protestant Christian from the Scheduled Tribe category. Someone has complained against me, stating that I violated the religious community rules, discipline, and decorum of the community. I raised concerns against unlawful practices in the name of religion, such as verbally asking the non-Christian partner to submit an NOC, convert to the religion, and then marry in the church. If refused, there were threats to falsely accuse and terminate the job and harm the family. When I questioned these practices citing Indian law, such as the Special Marriage Act and the Christian Marriage Act, the community and church body stated that religion is above every law. When asked if the community rules are documented, they refuse, saying, "This is the rule, and everyone has to follow it." Court marriage is not an option as it negatively impacts the family and government job, leaving no choice for individuals to marry outside the religion and community. What actions will be taken against me, and will I lose my job?

As a central Govt. employee, and being in India your rights are protected under the Constitutuion which are A19 and A25. Since your concerns are based on legal provisions such as the Special Marriage Act, 1954, and the Christian Marriage Act, 1872, raising awareness about unlawful practices should not be grounds for disciplinary action. But take assistance from the Laawyer.

The religious community cannot force anyone to follow unlawful practices that violate Indian law. You have the legal right to raise concerns. You should consult a lawyer specializing in employment law to ensure your job is protected and to challenge any unjust actions. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
