Will I lose my job for questioning religious practices?

I am a Central Government employee through UPSC. I am a Protestant Christian from the Scheduled Tribe category. Someone has complained against me, stating that I violated the religious community rules, discipline, and decorum of the community. I raised concerns against unlawful practices in the name of religion, such as verbally asking the non-Christian partner to submit an NOC, convert to the religion, and then marry in the church. If refused, there were threats to falsely accuse and terminate the job and harm the family. When I questioned these practices citing Indian law, such as the Special Marriage Act and the Christian Marriage Act, the community and church body stated that religion is above every law. When asked if the community rules are documented, they refuse, saying, "This is the rule, and everyone has to follow it." Court marriage is not an option as it negatively impacts the family and government job, leaving no choice for individuals to marry outside the religion and community. What actions will be taken against me, and will I lose my job?

You have the right to follow Indian law, including the Special Marriage Act. Religious rules cannot override Indian laws. If the complaint affects your job, you may appeal through legal channels to defend yourself, especially if no law has been violated. It is advised to consult an expert lawyer who will assist you with the best course of action. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
