What legal action can be taken against defamation?

I had a boyfriend, and we were physically intimate once. After some time, he cheated on me and left me. Now, he is spreading rumors about our physical intimacy within my friend circle, and people keep coming to ask me whether I had physical intimacy with him. This is mentally torturing me, and I am getting sick because of this. What legal action can I take against him?

In Indian law, you can think of bringing a case of defamation against him. Defamation is punishable under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) when false words cause injury to a person's reputation. His rumor-mongering can also amount to harassment with mental anguish, which can be actionable under relevant provisions. Document all occurrences—record phone calls, collect witness statements, and save written or electronic evidence. You should consult a defamation and personal rights lawyer who can advise on bringing a criminal complaint or a civil action to prevent the defamation and seek compensation for the psychological distress suffered.

You can file a defamation suit for spreading false rumors. Send a legal notice demanding an apology and withdrawal of defamatory remarks before taking any legal action. Collect evidence like messages, voice recordings, and witness statements to support your case. Seek legal advice for further action.
