Are we legally obligated to submit the Sale Deed to society?

Our housing society is in the process of updating its mailing list and has requested that we submit our original Sale Deed for this purpose. However, we have concerns about the potential misuse of this document, as we have read that a Sale Deed can be misused in certain circumstances. We would like to understand whether we are legally obligated to provide the Sale Deed, as the society has stated in their email that its submission is mandatory. For reference, there has been no change in ownership details—they remain the same as at the time of the original purchase. To comply with their request, I am submitting alternative property ownership proof such as the property tax receipt, excluding the Sale Deed and Sale Agreement. Additionally, I am willing to present the original Sale Deed in person if required, rather than submitting a copy. Could you please advise us on our rights and obligations in this matter? Thank you for your guidance.

You are not legally bound to provide the Sale Deed if the ownership details have not changed. It is your right to submit alternative documents like the property tax receipt. If the society insists, you can present the Sale Deed in person, but sharing it is not mandatory. Consult a lawyer for more clarity on your rights.
