What happens if no objection arises for government land ownership?

I have a farmhouse of 2894 sq. ft., which was purchased by my father at that time. Next to my farmhouse, around 300 sq. ft. of land was acquired by my father in 1996 (and is owned by the government). Does the law state that if no objections arise within 30 years, the 300 sq. ft. part of the land becomes mine?

Your situation involves government-owned land, which is subject to different legal principles than private property. In India, the doctrine of adverse possession allows a person to claim ownership if they have continuous, open, and exclusive possession of land for 30 years (for government land) without interruption or objection. However, claiming adverse possession against government property is difficult, as courts generally protect public land. Since your father acquired the land in 1996, the 30-year period will complete in 2026. Until then, the government can reclaim it. You should check land records and consult a lawyer for legal regularization or lease options.

Sir, simply occupying land for 30 years does not automatically make it yours, especially if it’s government-owned. The law of adverse possession does not apply to government land. To claim ownership, you would need legal transfer or sale from the government. It is best to consult a property lawyer to explore your options and understand the legal process.
