How can I legally recover money from someone?

Hi, I will explain my issue with the help of some characters - A, B, C and D. "A" gave money to "B" to invest in property and make a profit. "B" then gave money to "C," who lacked a bank account, so "D" (C's friend) received the cheque from "B" without "B" knowing "D." Later, "C" instructed "D" to withdraw the money as per "B's" instructions. "C" vanished with the money, leaving "A" and "B" seeking reimbursement from "D." No prior interaction occurred between "D," "A," or "B." Is "D" legally liable? "D" never met "B" when the cheque was issued. "C" collected cheque.
