How can we proceed with a court marriage in India?
Hello, I am from Mauritius (a boy) and my girlfriend is from Murmah, West Bengal, India. We are planning to have a court marriage and obtain a marriage certificate as soon as possible. Could you please provide details?
To get married in Mauritius, you and your girlfriend have to file several documents: valid passports, birth certificates issued in the last three months, and, if applicable, divorce or death certificates. The Central Civil Status Office needs to receive these documents one month before your date of marriage at the latest. Then it will publish the notice publicly for 24 hours. Within this time, objections can be filed. Then, it is allowed to marry before a Civil Status Office, and even outside of a Civil Status Office with two witnesses. However, local ordinances must not be disregarded.
You and your girlfriend would have to prepare several documents when marrying in Mauritius: two copies of each of your passports, birth certificates issued within the last three months, passport photos, and any divorce or death certificates in case either of you was divorced or is a widow. This set of documents has to be submitted to the Central Civil Status Office at least one month before your wedding date. A public notice shall be published for 24 hours announcing your marriage. Once verified, the ceremony can take place at the Civil Status Office or at a chosen location, with two witnesses.
