Who is responsible for paying the shipper?

I reside in the USA. Last year I ordered a wooden temple from a company in India. They gave me 2 invoices one for temple cost and one for shipping charges. I paid most of it with a little bit left for after delivery. Last month I got an email and call from a shipping company saying the temple is in USA and needs to be picked up as COD. The COD price they quoted was almost twice what I already paid for shipping. When I asked why, they said the delivery has been sitting in warehouse since March and the seller has not paid them. They are saying that I am now responsible for all charges since the seller is not responding. The seller responded to me once asking to pay all extra charges. My question is, can I be held responsible for these charges and action taken against me by shipping company like they are saying, since I have paid the temple company as agreed upon and never signed any contract with shipping company directly.

The seller is responsible for delivering the goods to you in accordance with the terms of the contract. This includes paying the shipping costs. If the seller fails to pay the shipping company, the shipping company may have the right to hold the goods until the charges are paid. However, the shipping company cannot simply demand that you pay the additional charges without your consent. You did not sign a contract with the shipping company, so you are not legally obligated to pay them. Contact us for further enquiry.
