How to know whether a complaint has been filed or not?

When I go to Police station and give my complaint written on paper, I get stamp and signature of the officer. But, I do not get any complaint/reference/docket/inward number. Shouldn't I have one? Can I ask for it? If the office denies to give, can I complain to station-in-charge?
