What is the standard alimony amount and settlement discussion process?

I am a salaried person earning 32 lakhs per annum. My mother and brother live in Mavli, a small town near Udaipur, and own a house in my mother's name. My mother is a housewife, and my brother works in a nearby mine, earning 8 lakhs per annum. My father is a government officer earning 25 lakhs per annum and will retire in March 2026. My wife is educated, holds an MBA, and works, earning around 5 lakhs per annum. Her family lives in Ajmer and owns a house. Her father is a retired government officer receiving a pension, her mother is a housewife, and her younger brother works in Mumbai with an annual package of 22 lakhs. Now, I want to know what is a standard alimony or settlement amount I should offer to my wife. Also, how should the discussion between both families take place so we can settle on a nominal amount?

The standard alimony would be an offer of 25% of your monthly salary, say around ₹ 66,667 for monthly or 1/5th to 1/3rd of your total net worth for a lump sum amount. The common framework in family discussions can be mutual respect for the self-esteem of the parties and their financial positions and requirements. Open communication of expectations and financial capability may perhaps help in arriving at a fair settlement. Checking with a lawyer as to the fairness and legality of the agreement is always prudent.

Alimony is to be offered as a standard figure 25% of the monthly salary, approximately ₹66,667 for each month, or 1/5th to 1/3rd of your total net worth as an amount. Mutual respect and understanding have to be the basis of the family discussions, with due consideration of both parties' economic situations and needs. So open communication regarding expectations and capacities would bring forth a proper settlement. It is best to seek a legal expert to ensure the agreement is fair and legally binding.

Sir, alimony is not fixed rather it depends on income, standard of living, marriage duration and financial needs. Both the families may negotiate informally but it is advised to consult an expert lawyer who will assist you to ensure a fair settlement.
