In India, the legal age to enter into a live-in relationship is 18 years. The Allahabad High Court affirmed that people below this age cannot engage in such relationships and they are both immoral and illegal. A live-in relationship is considered valid only when at least one of the partners is a legal adult. Live-in relationships, though not considered marriages, are tolerated between adults who are of age, even though the law does not allow minors to engage in such a relationship.

In India, a live-in relationship is permissible with persons of age 18 or more. This was held and affirmed by the Allahabad High Court when it ruled that it was not possible for individuals below this age to do such a relationship, saying they are immoral and also illegal. While the live-in relationships have no marital status, a live-in relationship between two consenting adults aged above the age of qualification required is acceptable. This is why both parties need to be of the age qualifying them to enter a legally valid relationship which will fall under the law but may not be treated exactly the same as a marriage in terms of rights.
